Women Online :: Internet Feminist Technology Essays
Women Online Is it better to be a woman online or a man online? Which sex is more respected? Do women have better conversations then men or is it the other way around? Can women participate in a debate with men and still be heard? Are women being treated equally online in comparison to their male counterparts? These are some of the questions that are asked in the articles of Dale Spender and Laura Miller. Dale Spenders article entitled Gender-Bending, and Laura Millers article entitled Women and Children First: Gender and the Settling of the Electronic Frontier. In which the two female authors give their opinions about the good side and bad side of being a woman online. In Dale Spenders article she describes how womens behaviors alter depending on if they are talking to a man or a woman. Their behaviors alter by the terms and tones they use to their posture/demeanor and weather or not eye contact is made. Spender observed such behavior in a study she preformed. When a man entered a conversation uninvited women would automatically give him the floor, as was to be expected. But what wasnt expected was that women would change the way they were sitting and they would look up to him rather then down. In another experiment a baby was handed to a group of women with its sex unidentified. When the sex was identified as a female the baby was held closely and tightly. The females heads were bent down and they spoke quietly and soothingly to the baby. When the women where told that a mistake was made that the baby was in fact a boy the behavior altered. At some points the baby was almost dropped when the women changed the way the baby was being held. The baby was held further away and was bounced up and down. The womens tone changed from soothing to loud and robust. The child was also raised to eye-level when talked to. Even in the case of babies Spender believes that all of our words, actions, and body language are gender-loaded(71). She believes that only when we know the sex of who we are talking to can we actually conduct a conversation. Due to these studies and experiments Spender came to the conclusion that the only way to gain respect is to be a man. Not only when we are young but in writing and conversation.

These places help enhance their experience of understanding landscape by how each one creates the feeling of satisfaction and cultivate the feeling of appreciation that contributes to the landscape experience. It must be a mixture of both understanding and at the same time appreciation of his/her perceptive abilities. However, an individual must not only settle for what is observable. The visitor must create and conceptualize his/her own interpretation of the landscape. This image will bear some relationship to the way in which the individual responds to and structures his world as a result of his physical perceptual capacities, socio-economic, cultural, personality, experiential and other characteristics. The three types of places mentioned give both direct and indirect experiences to the visitor. Looking at it, the area of indirect experiences is classified to be relative. An experience of an individual may vary depending on how each one perceives a landscape and associates it to personal experience. A person feeling can range from curiosity over the landscape to happiness and awe. There are varied reactions among people and this creates different reactions that cultivate experience. On the other hand, there are also direct experiences that the landscape contributes to a visitor. These are (1) education, (2) environmental education and (3) interpretative centers. Education can be considered as one important contributions of landscape experience. It creates awareness that has been stimulated by the actuality of perceiving, analyzing and understanding the landscape. A visitor creates its connection with the landscape by the way it manifests itself to the viewer and in return how the person responds to it given the factors that revolve around the environment and the individual. Thus, this creates the process of education for each visitor. Environmental education can also be seen as an outcome of landscape experience since the three examples that were given are primarily natural or ecological sites. Landscape experiences gives idea to visitors of the current situation of these sites. This experience creates awareness especially during this time that the call for environmental concern has been constantly increasing. Effective and meaningful environmental education is a challenge we must take seriously if we and future generations are to enjoy the benefits of our natural heritage. Thus, landscape experiences creates an avenue for environmental education by showcasing visitors the beauty and wonder of these sites and how each one is responsible for its protection and continued sustenance. The last mentioned is landscape experience creates interpretative centers. Landscape experience gives opportunities for interpretative centers to provide adequate information regarding the site. Also, interpretative centers provide cultivate interests of volunteers and organizations to further promote the site. Architecture plays an important role in landscape experience. People who have background in the topic understand that its facets are diversified. To fully appreciate architecture, students need to deconstruct its meaning from a variety of perspectives: artistic, social, and scientific. Architecture serves as a guide for visitors to engage in their local landscape. The idea is that each individual seeks find meaning and experience in the landscape however this cannot be done without an understanding architecture. Another is that architectureââ¬â¢ diversity and varied perspectives paves the way for an increased landscape experience among visitors. Different meanings and interpretations are derived from these sites that foster deeper learning experiences. There are many variants and factors that determine the landscape experience of an individual. The capability of an individual to associate the landscape with an understanding of architecture and different subjective interestsââ¬â¢ can create a meaningful and worthwhile experience. The full appreciation of the environment experience again is achieved if a learning process is obtained by the individual upon exposure to the landscape.

Wilson vs. Roosevelt the Better Progressive President Essay
In the first two decades of the twentieth century the national political scene reflected a growing American belief in the ideas of the Progressive movement. This movement was concerned with fundamental social and economic reforms and gained in popularity under two presidents. Yet Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson espoused two different approaches to progressive reform. And each one was able to prevail upon congress to pass legislation in keeping with his own version of the progressive dream. These two people, although they had different principles in mind, had one goal: to make changes to the nation for the better of the people and the country. Setting out to reach this goal, Roosevelt came to be a president of the common man whileâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦He placed millions of acres of land under federal protection, preserving Americas natural resources. He regulated interstate commerce and helped laborers to get a fair chance at the negotiating table. In his New Nationa lism platform, he called for womens suffrage, an end to child labor, pensions for the elderly, unemployment insurance, and increased regulation of the trusts. However, Wilson was less of a peoples man because he was a strong proponent of states rights and felt that such issues as womens suffrage and child labor laws were issues for the state. Wilson rejected a stronger role of government in human affairs. Wilsons approach to progressivism was aimed more at commerce rather than with the people. As soon as he became president, he set to tackle the triple wall of privilege: bank, tariff, and the trusts. He demanded that all trusts must be broken up in order for small businesses to succeed and competition to be restored. When it came to trusts, he showed no mercy, believing that entrepeurship and competition was the key to a healthy economy. Wilson pushed for creation of a Federal Trade Commission, a federal agency which would regulate trade on a continuous basis. He also secured passage of the Federal Reserve Act which created a federal agency to serve as economic watch dog and regulator of the banking industry. He also helped pass the Underwood Tariff Bill, whichShow MoreRelated Wilson vs. Roosevelt Essay724 Words à |à 3 PagesWilson vs. Roosevelt In the first two decades of the twentieth century the national political scene reflected a growing American belief in the ideas of the Progressive movement. Huck Finn and Morality Essay Example For Students
Huck Finn and Morality Essay Throughout the incident on pages 66-69 in Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Huck fights with two distinct voices. One is siding with society, saying Huck should turn Jim in, and the other is seeing the wrong in turning his friend in, not viewing Jim as a slave. Twain wants the reader to see the moral dilemmas Huck is going through, and what slavery ideology can do to an innocent like Huck. Huck does not consciously think about Jim s impending freedom until Jim himself starts to get excited about the idea. The reader sees Huck s first objection to Jim gaining his freedom on page 66, when Huck says, Well, I can tell you it made me all over trembly and feverish, too, to hear him, because I begun to get it through my head that he was most free-and who was to blame for it? Why, me. I could get that out of my conscience, no how nor no way. Huck is hearing the voice of society at this point, not his own. He does not see a moral dilemma with Jim being free; he is opposed to the fact that he is the one helping him. This shows Huck misunderstanding of slavery. Huck does not treat Jim like a slave when they travel together, this shows the reader that Huck views Jim as an equal in most ways. Huck sees having a slave only as owning the person, not actually being a slave to someone. Therefore, when he helps Jim runaway it would be like stealing. This conscience is telling him that Miss Watson, Jim s master, never did anything wrong to him and that he shouldn t be doing a wrong to her by helping Jim escape. This is a totally different view of Miss Watson from Huck s perspective. Huck always disliked Miss Watson, but now that this society voice plays a part in Huck s judgment his views are changed. This society views allows Huck to see Jim, a friend, only as a slave and Miss Watson, almost a foe in his young views, as a dear friend. Twain is showing the reader the gross injustices of slavery in this little incident, as well as his moral opposition to slavery. Twain wants the reader to see how slavery ideology changed people, even those who didn t understand it fully. Twain wants the reader to see how unfair slavery was in how it could even change Huck s thinking, whom the reader had never before seen voice ill conceptions about black people. When Huck s mind can be so radically changed to such opposing ideas and morals, the reader sees these horrors plainly and knows Twain s opposition to slavery is right. Twain does not let the reader thing badly of Huck for very long, though, having Huck s true voice shine out by the end of the confrontation. By page 67 Huck is almost loathing to go and turn Jim in, seeing the act as an obligation rather than a moral right. He says, Well, I just felt sick. But I says, I got to do it-I can t get out of it. Twain wants the reader to see Huck s change in judgment. The reader is able to see Huck s newfound reluctance, brought on by Jim s words of appreciation. These words bring Huck back to the realization that Jim is a friend, not property. And even though Huck still consciously says he must turn in Jim, the reader does not believe he will do it anymore. Huck s confrontation with the slave hunters and his scheme to protect Jim prove the reader correct in his assumption. Huck has now subconsciously decided to protect Jim at all costs. This is the second voice that Jim hears. This voice tells him that, s pose you d a done right and give Jim up; would you felt better than what you do now? Now, says I, I d feel bad-I d feel just the same way I do now. Well, then, says I, what s the use you learning to do right, when it s troublesome to do right and ain t no trouble to do wrong, and the wages is just the same? .u69d3c729f7f9141b2bd2091401c05e0e , .u69d3c729f7f9141b2bd2091401c05e0e .postImageUrl , .u69d3c729f7f9141b2bd2091401c05e0e .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u69d3c729f7f9141b2bd2091401c05e0e , .u69d3c729f7f9141b2bd2091401c05e0e:hover , .u69d3c729f7f9141b2bd2091401c05e0e:visited , .u69d3c729f7f9141b2bd2091401c05e0e:active { border:0!important; } .u69d3c729f7f9141b2bd2091401c05e0e .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u69d3c729f7f9141b2bd2091401c05e0e { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u69d3c729f7f9141b2bd2091401c05e0e:active , .u69d3c729f7f9141b2bd2091401c05e0e:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u69d3c729f7f9141b2bd2091401c05e0e .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u69d3c729f7f9141b2bd2091401c05e0e .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u69d3c729f7f9141b2bd2091401c05e0e .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u69d3c729f7f9141b2bd2091401c05e0e .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u69d3c729f7f9141b2bd2091401c05e0e:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u69d3c729f7f9141b2bd2091401c05e0e .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u69d3c729f7f9141b2bd2091401c05e0e .u69d3c729f7f9141b2bd2091401c05e0e-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u69d3c729f7f9141b2bd2091401c05e0e:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Camouflage With The Rebels EssayEven though these are Huck s thoughts at the end of the incident, the reader knows this was Huck s subconscious battle before he decided to help Jim. Twain wants the reader to see how hard it is to break out of society s ideas, but someone has to be willing to do it. Twain wants the reader to respect Huck s great moral conversion, even if it is hidden behind Huck s lie to do whatever come handiest at the time because the reader knows Huck will always choose Jim as handiest now. Twain is telling the reader to do what is handiest but also to remember whom it affects, friend of foe? Because, above even society s views, should come friends. Twain s morals are clearly shown through this short, but hugely important, passage. I think his morals were bold for his time and I respect him in the highest revere for his braveness at expressing them in a time period when blacks in the south were still very much hated. This fact in itself should spur others on to do something against the grain of society and voice their true opinions. It is a lesson that can be appreciated by all time periods because I know I do.

Reveille caught my attention when I first listened toLaced and heard the song Butterfly. Butterflymay not seem like a hardcore song title, but dont let the name fool you. It isawesome because it blends alternative rock and rap. With the combination of thesemusic styles, Reveille forms its own genre. Laced isReveilles debut album and almost every song is good. I think this band is one ofthe best out there today. Their amazing beats and lyrics are sure to keep a crowdmoving. If you are into alternative rock bands like Limp Bizkit and Korn, youlllove Reveille. Lead vocalist Drew Simollares blends music with singing andrapping. His lyrics are very creative and make you look at things from adifferent perspective.
